As we wrap-up our community unit, we took some time to reflect with students about what we learned in the course of these past weeks. Our goal was to give students ample opportunities in order to create an understanding of the central idea: People can communicate, collaborate and work together to create community. We explored our Missoula community starting with our school neighborhood, then extending to the larger community: field trips to the Hip Strip, PEAS farm and Pine View park. We communicated about our favorite places in Missoula, which created connections among students “I like the big dipper too!” “I have been there!”. Students collaborated in centers by taking food to the Food Bank (science center) from the house (imagination center), PEAS farm (building center) and Bernice’s Bakery (art center). We worked together in groups to build a community project displayed in class, and learned to be responsible community members by doing our “trabajos” is class every week and participating in the playground clean-up. These hands-on experiences are the ones that have impacted students the most and we are confident that students have all gained a better understanding of our Missoula community and what it means to be a community member. Please let us know of any comments/conversations your preschooler makes at home regarding our community unit and write down any ACTIONS taken on our action board!
